Aberdeen, Scotland – The World’s Capital for Oil & Gas Jobs
The UK’s oil and gas sector supplies energy to power modern life, as well as providing heat for our homes and fuel for transport. The industry employs hundred thousands of people and makes a major contribution to the UK economy in terms of revenues, technologies and exports.
Aberdeen is one of the world's Oil and Gas capitals. Its geographic position has maintained its dominance of the European hydrocarbon exploration and production environment for many years. With proximity to the North Sea’s oil and gas resources, companies from all over the globe have chosen to base significant numbers of staff in the area. Aberdeen - in the North East of Scotland - is home to hundreds of world leading oil and gas companies – as well as providing thousands of talented individuals with exceptional jobs within the oil and gas industry.
Although most of the major oil and gas reservoirs in the North Sea have been tapped, the improvement in technology is allowing the industry to produce from smaller, more marginal reservoirs and to significantly extend the working life of most of the existing production facilities. There will be jobs in the Aberdeen oil industry well into the foreseeable future as well as opportunities for skilled and experienced workers in other parts of the world.
In fact, experts are suggesting that in 2010, over 80% of Aberdeen oil companies have awarded pay increases to their staff in a bid to keep them. And that in 2011, 60% of operating companies and 89% of contract companies are actively seeking to hire more staff.
In particular, some of the decommissioning work taking place in the North Sea is likely to have a significant impact on the numbers of job opportunities available in the area.
In addition, the jobs boom in the renewables sector is also likely to create competition with oil and gas companies for energy related talent.
